The RFL has restarted its popular coach education programme, which was suspended earlier this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Covid-secure sessions took place last weekend in Featherstone and Leigh, where 16 community club coaches earned their stripes.
At the Featherstone Lions club eight coaches qualified at level one, with eight more completing the first day of their level two qualification at Leigh Miners Rangers. Sessions involved classroom-based activities and practical challenges which were subject to rigorous risk assessment beforehand and strict attention to Covid protocols throughout.
RFL coach education manager, Richard Tunningley, says:
“It’s great to be back, and I’d like to thank our training partners at Warrington Vale Royal College, Coachwise and 1st 4 Sport for helping us get to this stage.
“My congratulations go to those learners who came through with flying colours – and my thanks to them also for their understanding as they waited so patiently for the sessions to resume.
“These were trial events, and Dave Downes at Featherstone Lions and Christian Tyrer at Leigh Miners Rangers were instrumental in making them a success. We can now look forward to arranging and delivering more courses throughout the winter as we look to catch up with the backlog of coaches wanting to qualify.”
More than 11,000 people have qualified as Rugby League coaches at levels one, two and three since the introduction of UKCC (United Kingdom Coaching Certificate) qualifications in 2008. Anybody interested in pursuing a coaching qualification should click here.
