Community clubs need funding to develop and grow.
Every aspect of running a club, from improving facilities to providing new kit; paying insurance to hiring training facilities - is dependent on clubs having sufficient money to remain sustainable.
Top tips for successfully securing funding
- Read the pre-application guidance: Make sure you have checked that your application meets the criteria of the grant, and ensure that you align your submission as closely as possible to the investors’ criteria.
- Tell a story: Make you application stand out from the others and show how it will really make a difference to people in your community. Detail how the funding will lead to sustainable delivery and the long-term impacts it could have.
- Contact the investor to check over the application or to ask any questions: This shows that you are keen and good at using your initiative. It also offers the opportunity for valuable feedback and most importantly starts to build a relationship between you and the investing body, which in turn gives you credibility
- Leave plenty of time between submission and project start time: This allows you to troubleshoot if funding isn’t received and gives you time to make sure all key partnerships are in place and debriefed.
- Show that the project won’t waste money: Most community projects aren’t designed to make money, but at the same time, it’s important to show the investor that yours won’t be needlessly wasting it. If it was your money, would you invest on a wasteful project?
- Build relationships: It is extremely important that you show that any potential funding will not only impact on your organisation, but also the wider community and any partner programme, if applicable.
- Do your research: Do you know about other funding and similar organisations or clubs in your area that have applied for funding. Speak to these clubs to find out what they did to secure the funding.
- How will you promote what you are doing? Consider including a brief statement in the bid about how you will promote the funding received and what the communication plan is and how you will promote the new scheme.
- Ensure your submission is error-free: Make sure your spelling, grammar and match are consistent throughout the document. Do not leave your application until the closing date and make sure to keep copies of the submission, in case you need to use them for further reference.

Fundraising and generating sustainable income for your Rugby League club is essential to its success and continued future development.
There are funding schemes in place through the CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme and other sources of funding but clubs must also find additional ways of fundraising and generating income. A Lasting Legacy
Rugby League is a way of life for communities across the North of England. It has rare access to hard-to-reach groups in some of the most deprived areas. Hosting the RLWC2021 will give the sport an even more powerful platform from which to connect with these people and improve their economic and social wellbeing.
RLWC2021 will amplify these programmes for host partners that will see a long-lasting legacy developed for the sport through the CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme.
In order to inspire communities and leave a lasting legacy, a record £10million of government funding will be delivered by the Rugby Football League and Sport England. Not-for-profit organisations are able to apply for funding that can contribute to inspire the next generation of rugby league players, officials and volunteers.
Organisations have the option to apply for small-scale requests of capital funding, up to £15,000, for items such as kits for new teams, training equipment for sessions that will engage new players, grounds maintenance equipment to increase the quality of pitches, goal posts and post protectors; or large-scale requests to invest in current provision such as clubhouse improvements, pitch improvement works and floodlighting, or the creation of new facilities that can support the growth of the game and long-term sustainability of clubs.

The CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme is dedicated to improving the environments where Rugby League takes place; giving people more and better opportunities to engage with the game and to get active.
The programme has been made possible by a £10m commitment from Government as part of the hosting of the Rugby League World Cup tournament in 2021.
The CreatedBy RLWC2021 programme is delivered through a partnership of the RLWC2021 Ltd, the RFL, Sport England and the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
This approach has been adopted to create efficiency and ensure effective delivery of the public funding.

Like all other organisations who collect and use personal data, both the RFL and Sport England are subject to the requirements set out in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
We take our responsibility to look after personal data very seriously and we ensure that respecting privacy is at the heart of all we do.
Why we need to collect your personal data
Rugby League World Cup 2021 Limited, collect personal data on behalf of Sport England and the RFL for the following purposes:
- To assess applications for funding
- To monitor grants
- To evaluate the operation and effectiveness of our funding programmes
- To prevent or detect fraud
- To report anonymised statistics to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)
- To respond to queries or complaints about the application raised by you
- To send you updates and marketing materials, where you have consented to this
Sport England has a statutory duty to distribute National Lottery and Exchequer funding in support of increasing participation in sport and physical activity and is working in partnership with the RFL to fulfil this obligation. This means we need to collect and use personal data because it is “necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in Sport England” (GDPR, Art 6 (1) (e)).
Rugby League World Cup 2021 Ltd, Rugby Football League and Super League Europe collect and use your personal data for marketing purposes, where you have expressly consented to this.
What personal data we will collect and how we will use it
We will collect and use the following personal data:
- Names and contact information
- Other unsolicited personal data about you or others that you voluntarily provide in your application for funding
We do not solicit any special category personal data, such as information about your gender, ethnicity, religion, or health.
We will use your personal data in order to assess your application, monitor grants, to evaluate our funding programmes and to report anonymised statistics within Sport England and to Government.
We will also use your personal data to administer your application, provide service updates and to respond to any queries you raise. We will also send marketing material if you have consented to receiving updates from the Rugby League World Cup, the RFL or their partners.
If required, we will use your personal data in order to carry out identity checks. Personal data will be disclosed to a credit reference or fraud prevention agency if it is necessary and proportionate for us to do so.
Who we will share it with
Personal data will be collected via the Rugby League World Cup website, this will then be shared with the RFL who will in turn share it with Sport England in the case of large grant applications only.
Personal data will be made available to relevant Sport England and RFL colleagues for the purposes listed above Your personal data will be held securely within Sport England, RFL or Rugby League World Cup systems. All personal data associated with the assessment of applications or the award of funding is held within the European Economic Area Personal data held for the purposes of marketing may be transferred outside the EEA and where this is the case, appropriate safeguards will be put in place.
We will disclose personal data to third parties if we believe we are reasonably required to do so by law, regulation, court order or any competent government, statutory or public authority. We will also disclose personal data to the third parties listed below if it is lawful, necessary and proportionate for us to do so:
- Accountants, auditors and evaluators
- Other organisations or groups involved in delivering funded projects
- Other Lottery distributers and Government departments
- Other organisations for the prevention and detection of fraud
If you provide personal data about an individual other than yourself when completing an application form, it will be held in accordance with this Privacy Statement. We would ask you to make sure these individuals are aware that you are providing their personal data to Sport England.
How long we will keep it
Sport England will keep personal data relating to grant applications in line with the periods set out in our file retention schedule. In some cases, where a grant is considered to relate to a matter of national importance, application data is retained in perpetuity.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you are entitled to access your personal data by making a subject access request to the DPO of Sport England or DPO of RFL at the contact details provided above. You can also to ask us to rectify any mistakes in your personal data and in some cases have it erased. You can withdraw your consent to receiving direct marketing at any time.
If you are concerned about our handling of your personal data you should contact our Data Protection Officer to make a complaint. You are also entitled to lodge a complaint about our handling of your personal data with the Information Commissioner's Office.
