Betfred Women's Super League | Preview

The 2023 Betfred Women’s Super League is back with a bang.

Last weekend’s season opener between 2022 grand finalists Leeds Rhinos and York Valkyrie provided yet another thrilling contest between the two sides, with the Valkyrie triumphing 34-12 in front of a record crowd of 5,308 at Headingley. 

The competition continues this weekend with another intriguing set of fixtures. First up, Huddersfield Giants host the Rhinos at the John Smith’s Stadium this evening, as part of a double-header which will also see the Giants’ men side compete against Catalans Dragons in the Betfred Super League. 

Lois Forsell’s Leeds side will be desperate to earn their first win of 2023 after falling to defeat against York on the opening day, whilst the Giants will also aim to kickstart their campaign with a victory.

Tonight’s fixture could also prove to be memorable for Leeds captain Hanna Butcher, who looks set to make her 50th appearance for the club. 

The biggest tie of the weekend takes place on Sunday afternoon, however, when York face off against 2021 champions St Helens at the LNER Community Stadium, live on The

Lindsay Anfield’s York can make it two wins from as many games, whilst the Saints, led by new England Women captain Jodie Cunningham, will be desperate to open their campaign with a win.

Both sides have squads packed with proven international talent, and one player that will be in action at the LNER Community Stadium is England star Hollie-Mae Dodd, who, this week, became the first English player to move to the NRLW after signing with the Canberra Raiders for the 2023 season.

Elsewhere, Warrington Wolves host Wigan Warriors in the final Group 1 fixture at Victoria Park, whilst a further three fixtures take place in Group 2.
